About This Item
London: J. Darby, A Bettesworth, and F. Clay; in Trust for Richard, James, and Bether Wellington, 1730. Sir John Vanbrugh (1664-1726) was a noted playwright and architect (who designed Blenheim Palace). This comedy of manners followed his great success of "The Provok's Wife" and was produced in 1697. This is a Very Good copy of an early printing from three years after the playwright's death. Scarce. Disbound; this is the text only, with remnants of a leather binding on the spine and noted as the "End of the Fifth Volume." Title Page, with device; pp. 215-303; Preface; Prologue; This copy is notable due to a three-page catalogue by the publisherat the end. While this was standard in the following century, bookseller catalogues were not common in the early 18th Century. Textblock nicely clear and bright, but several of the last pages are loose but still present.. Early Printing. Disbound. Very Good/No Jacket. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.
