LANDSCAPE GARDENING

Two volumes.

The revised and preferred edition of Volume I and the first edition of Volume II. Fine copies in contemporary English calf with red morocco spine labels. Armorial bookplates of Richard Hart Davis (1767-1842), a descendant of King William IV and collector of rare books and paintings.

Primary documents of the Picturesque movement in landscape gardening, an attempt to discredit Capability Brown's theories of invasive landscaping and an argument for designing gardens after the works of the landscape painters Claude Lorrain and Salvator Rosa.
"Price advocates gardening by calculated neglect (what Repton thought would result in a 'huge-picturesque forest') and the use of artificial foregrounds to link the wild park with the formal house garden." Weinreb 17:119. The second volume contains "three further treatises designed to meet Repton's challenge for Price to produce a practical method of improvement. ...Price suggests an ordered procession from the grand Italianate garden around the mansion, through graveled walks and shrubberies, to wooded parklands and eventually to unrestrained nature." Weinreb 17:120.

Description:
London : R Chiswell in St Paul's Churchyard, T Sawbridge in Little-Britain and R Bentley in Russell-Street in Covent Garden, 1691 A very good copy of the 8th edition of Evelyn's classic work which was the first calendar produced for english gardeners (first published in 1664). John Evelyn (1620-1706) was, among other talents, a noted horticulturalist. In what appears to be the original binding which has been repaired so that it has a newer spine. The spine has a red title label and gilt lettering and decoration around raised bands. There is some wear to the edges of the boards but the binding is otherwise in very good condition. Internally the free endpapers look to have been replaced at some point. There is a black and white engraved frontispiece and title page with red and black inks. There is an ink marking at the top of the title page which has blotted onto the top of the frontispiece. With dedication to Abraham Cowley Esq; a dedicated poem by Abraham Cowley called 'The Garden' to… Read More

Description:
London : James Cundee, 1806 A good copy of this scarce 6 volume work bound in 3 volumes. With 58 (of 60) hand coloured plates and 6 hand coloured vignette title pages. An account of natural history based around observation and reading mixed with anecdotes and tales relating to the animal in question. The illustrator (anonymous) has then produced some extraordinary illustrations including an orang utan at the dining table, a flock of herons attacking rooks, a boxing kangaroo, and a man riding an ostrich, and a sneaking crocodile. Rev Smith refers to himself as an 'editor' rather than an author - but there are no clues as to contributors. Originally planned in 4 volumes, Vol 5 and 6 (covering fish, amphibians, insects and other invertebrates) were added in 1807. Each volume has a frontispiece, a hand coloured vignette title page, and a plain title page. According to the directions to the binder at the end of Vol 6, there should be 60 plates - this copy is lacking a frontispiece of a turkey and… Read More
