About This Item

1682 1ed John Sheffield Essay On Poetry FAMOUS Tasso Milton Homer Virgil Pope John Sheffield was a 17th-century English poet who published several essays, memoirs, and poetical works. As a patron of John Dryden, Sheffield adapted Shakespearean plays which were more than likely edited by Dryden. Sheffield, too, was close with Alexander Pope of whom spoke quite highly of Sheffield's short work 'An Essay Upon Poetry". Sheffield used this work to criticize the work of Rochester and Cowley. Other notable names covered in this work include Tasso, Spencer, Milton, and Homer and Virgil.
