London: David Stott, 1891. 400 pp, 400 pp, 4 5/8" H - 2 volume set. Turquoise blue cloth with dark blue floral pattern (repeated in green on endpapers), medium brown spines with gilt lettering, small orange peacock device (faded) in black border on each spine, similar squares with "The Stott Library" on front/rear boards. Each volume has a tissue-covered frontispiece and decorated title page bearing the peacock device. The essays of the 16th century French writer/philosopher in these volumes include: Of Idlenesse; Of Lyers; Of Feare; Of the punishment of Cowardise; That we should not judge our Happiness untill after our Death; The profit of one man is the damage of another; Of Moderation; Of the Caniballes; A consideration upon Cicero; Of ancient Customes; Of the Vanitie of Words; Of a saying of Caesar; Of Smels and Odors; Of Praiers and Orisons; Of Age, etc. - 57 chapters in total. Volume I has a light lean to the spine, pages 163 to 174 are slightly mis-aligned in the binding, page 65 has a 1" edge tear archivally taped and a small light stain in the margin. Volume II has some pages as yet unopened, pages 9 to 16 and 25 to 32 have been roughly opened at the fore-edge - one tear is archivally taped on page 13. Both volumes have wrinkling at the top/bottom of the spines, browning to the edges of the text blocks and light edge wear.. Third Thousand.. Hard Cover. Good/No Dust Jackets.
