Christie, Manson & Woods, New York, auction catalogue for the sale held on 19th May 1989. Cloth, gilt, large 8vo, 31 cm,. 103 pp, plates including some fold-out plates in colour. Lots 2232-2370 (139 lots). An exceptional sale catalogue featuring superb treasures including unpublished illustrated manuscripts. From a pre-sale advertisement: "A remarkable collection of materials relating to Morris and his Kelmscott Press (founded 1890) and the circle of artists, authors and printers inspired by him, especially Thomas James Cobden-Sanderson. It includes a run of Kelmscott Press books whose centrepiece is the Chaucer, Works (Hammersmith, 1896), one of 13 copies on vellum of an edition of 438. The autograph manuscripts of Morris' Utopian romance News from Nowhere (published 1891) and of Morris's essay "A Note on His Aims in Founding the Kelmscott Press" (1895) will be featured, as will two highly important calligraphic manuscripts of the Morris circle: one, "The History of Frijthiof the Bold" in delicate roman calligraphy, decorated with gold capitals and fine small miniatures and borders; the other a splendid, unfinished manuscript on vellum, Virgil's Aeneid, consisting of 370 folios in fine roman calligraphy by Morris (and later, by Graily Hewitt), decorated with half-page miniatures by Fairfax-Murray after Burne-Jones, and with gilt capitals, illuminated initials and many illuminated page borders in Morris's rich leaf-and-foliage style...
