A sample copy of what became a popular and beautifully illustrated two volume work; 'Europe Illustrated'. This is a sample copy of what eventually became 'Europe Illustrated'. To the front pastedown there is a sample of a green cloth spine for a larger volume laid down. Following this there are examples of blue paper wraps, with 'Part' remaining blank. The wraps have publisher's adverts. Following this there are 10 plates, by T Allom and W H Bartlett and then pages 73-156 of text. The text of this work is written by John Sherer. Each plate has tissue guards. The plates present are: 'The Circle of Gavarnie Pyrenees', 'The Cathedral of St Gudule (sic) with Celebrated Carved Pulpit', 'Avignon on the Rhone', 'Periguex on the L'Isle Pyrenees', 'The Bridge of Toulouse', 'Tombs of the Kings in the Crypt of St Denis', 'The King's Chapel at Dreux' and 'The Col de Tortes'. The small section of text to this sample regards The Obelist of Luxor, The Champs Elysses, the Arc de Triomphe, and more regarding Paris. In the original pictorial cloth binding. Externally, generally smart with rubbing to the extremities and to the joints. Several light marks to the rear board. Bumping to the head and tail of spine. Front hinge is slightly strained but firm.
