Eugenia, the daughter of American expatriates, is the morganatic wife of a German prince, who is being urged to divorce her in favor of a state marriage. She and her artist brother, Felix, travel to Boston to meet their distant cousins' relatives, partially in hopes of making a wealthy marriage.

Its wit, gaiety, and charm have made this masterly short novel one of the most popular of James's novels.

Synopsis

The Europeans concerns an expatriate American, Eugenia, and her artist brother, Felix Young. Eugenia is the morganatic wife of a German prince, but she is to be repudiated in favor of a state marriage; thus she leaves for Boston to make an appropriate match of her own.

I enjoyed this book immensely. It blended the old and new world creatively. It's philosophical underpinnings were interesting. It was not a bestseller at the time, moreover, it probably is now. I like books that use the English Language in it's old form.
