About This Item
London: Macmillan, 1904. with an introduction by Austin Dobson 12mo size pictorial clothbound hardcover with a wonderful illustration executed in gold which fills the entire cover of a woman dressed in an upper class clothing style from the 1700s, standing under a tree holding a feather pen and leaving on a very large vase. The falling leaves of the tree help to fill much of the space on the cover. The titles, also in gilt are displayed on the vase. Gilt borders surround the illustration. The spine also has gilt titles and decorations. 477 pages with gilt borders all around. Black and white frontispiece and illustrated title page which share tissue covering, Other black and white illustrations throughout volume. Please note the date on the bottom of the vase on the front cover as "1903." This volume was published in 1904. This epistolary novel, Evelina, written by Frances, or Fanny, Burney (1752-1840) was first published, anonymously in 1778. Both reading and writing novels were considered inappropriate in Burney's social class at that time. Once Burney's identity was revealed, she became quite well known and she wrote several more novels, all of which showcase the lives of the English aristocracy. This beautifully illustrated volume has some flaws. Both hinges are split inside and the exterior spine cover appears to have been separated and has been reinforced with cello tape across the spine extending onto both covers. Some of the tape is now missing from the blank back cover but has left transfer marks. Blank fep is mostly detached and its corners are creased. Edgewear and worn corners. Chipped head and heel of spine and minor chipping to top edge. Toned pages. . Pictorial Cover. Good/No Jacket. Illus. by Thomson, Hugh. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
