About This Item

Lancaster, Penn.: G. Hills & Co., 1841. First Edition. Good in a contemporary full leather binding with a gilt on black leather label on the spine. An octavo measuring 8 1/2" by 5 1/4" with rubbing and wear to the leather at the head and heel of the spine and to the edges of the boards. The joints are beginning to show weakness and the front hinge is broken. The first short signature is loose with the folded, engraved frontispiece is missing its folded half. All of the other seven folded, engraved plates have damage caused by tears in the folds or closed tears to the plates in the folded areas. With the exception of the frontispiece none of the plates have missing pieces. Interestingly, there is a very early prior owner's name on the first free end page indicating that the book was "Bot 1842" for a price of $2.25. The book is contained within a recently constructed leather and cloth covered clamshell box with gilt text stamping on the spine. 633 pages of text illustrated with eight folding plates. Considered by Howes to be "quite scarce". (Howes, W-548; Ayer, 334)
