About This Item
New York: Abelard-Schuman. Very Good+ in Very Good dj. (c.1970). First Edition. Hardcover. (price-clipped) [modest shelfwear, light foxing to top of text block; jacket spine badly faded, with moderate rubbing/scuffing to the front and rear panels]. (B&W photographs) Posthumously-published autobiography of the African-American actress-singer, who died in 1965 at the age of 42 from an accidental overdose of an antidepressant, following a career downturn that was further complicated by financial troubles and a nervous breakdown. According to Conrad's introduction, Dandridge "wanted to tell of her friendships and romances that crossed the color line [but] her friends attacked her in full force, telling her that her autobiography was a disgrace and should be kept quiet." Following her death, he prepared the book for publication, working from tape recordings she had made. .
