His unhappiness with Reconstruction drove him to California, where he became a famed professor of geology and natural history, as well as a co-founder of the Sierra Club. This is a Near Fine copy of the First Edition. Brown pebbled cloth binding; ruled, with gilt lettering on the spine. Clean text; 344 pages, indexed; with a ten-page catalogue of Appleton's publications related to Evolution. Mild bumping and rubbing to head and foot of spine, else a Fine copy.
