From the noblest church elders not only translated as is but explained in a clear manner and the words of the story explained at the same time". [Our translation]. Originally written in French by the Society of the Maison du Port-Royal and edited by Messers Arnold und Sacy. This book was translated into German. The author was a respected French theologian and philosopher who lived from 1612-1694. Vg- overall, bound in 18th-century plain white vellum; the covers are a little darkened and soiled, and the pastedowns have been torn by the flaps of the vellum, which doesn't want to stay put. Ffep has a 1789 owner's name in ink and an 1868 name in pencil. Other than some minor foxing on the first blank pages, the interior is very clean; pages a little stiff. 477 pp. + 25-p. index.
