About This Item
cat40a. NY: New Amsterdam Book Company, 1899. Red pictorial cloth, front cover designed in pink & dark blue, lettered in gilt; spine designed in green & black, lettered in gilt. Floral end papers. Jarrold & Sons imprint at base of spine, and Jarrolds device in blind on back cover. Frontispiece & 2 inserted plates. 4 pages of ads for Jarrolds books at rear. A bit of chipping to spine ends, some wear to tips, spine a bit tanned; in general, a bright very good copy, quite attractive. This is an American issue of a London, Jarrold & Sons edition, with a tipped-in American title page. The first edition was published by Jarrold in 1896, and had no illustrations. There was also a Colonial Edition published by Macmillan in 1896. We believe this to be the first American edition, though we have heard a rumour of an American 1899 edition with New York, Jarrold, title page. This is possibly derived from the 1899 Jarrold edition, the 'Fifth Thousand', which was illustrated. A lost-race tale, of a race of classical Greek origin on an island in the South Pacific.
