About This Item

London: Bernard Quaritch, 15 Picadilly, 1839-1855 [i.e. 1878-1882]. Three vols. viii, 574, viii, 302; viii, 588 pp. Numerous charts, diagrams, 17 engraved plates (13 folding), no ads at rear of vol. I, vols. II & III w/ half-titles. Uniformly bound in green pebbled publisher’s cloth, embossed ruling in blind on covers, gilt lettering on spines (minor bumping, edgewear, rubbing, inner hinges starting in a couple vols., light fraying to spines), still a VG- sound set, w/ former ownership markings on endpapers, title of Vol. II, from the library of Sheldon Jack Brown. First Quaritch “Facsimile Reprint” edition of Faraday’s epoch-making work in the related areas of electricity and magnetism. His “Researches” reported his discovery of electro-magnetic induction, the laws of electrolysis, and the identity of electrification, as well as the differences of the electrical capacities of various substances. These discoveries led to the development of the technology of the electric motor, other practical uses of electricity, and nearly directly impacted the emergence of the modern age, and concepts of physics, mathematics, and technology. Quaritch had purchased the original copyright and remainders of Vol. III in 1878 when he decided to reprint the first two volumes to create sets, and once the remainders were quickly exhausted, also issued the work in “Facsimile Reprint” as well. See: Printing & the Mind of Man, 308, Norman, 762 (1st edition).
