The front and rear endpapers are browned, there is scattered foxing to some of the steel engravings and their tissue guards and to a few text pages, the cloth at the head and foot of the spine is rubbed and worn, the front outer joint has been rather crudely repaired; this is a good solid reading copy offered at a reduced price.. Pp. lx, 434; 8 engraved steel plates, 15 engraved steel vignettes in the text, many wood-cuts in the text; the list of illustrations lists a map of the world and a folding map of the Paumotu Group both of which are lacking in this copy. Publisher's original blind-stamped blue cloth, the spine is lettered in gilt with gilt floral designs, on the center front cover is gilt vignette of the tropical forest scene, sm 4to. This is 1858 reprinting of volume one of the Narrative of the United States Exploring Expedition that was first published in 1845. Inscribed to Mr. W. H. Smith from his sister, December 25, 1863 on the front free endpaper. Signed by W. H. Smith on the second blank endpaper.
