About This Item

New York, Duell, Sloan and Pearce, 1955. 1st ed. Hardcover. About near fine (front free endpaper very slightly foxed) in very good slightly edge-worn and spine-sunned jacket housed in archival mylar./Very good. 198 pages illustrations 21 cm. Author "was a German anti-communist resistance fighter, historian, and author. He is best known for founding the Checkpoint Charlie Museum (Mauermuseum - Museum Haus am Checkpoint Charlie) in Berlin, which is dedicated to the history of the Berlin Wall and the stories of those who attempted to escape from East Germany to the West. Born in Germany, Hildebrandt was involved in resistance against the Nazi regime during World War II. After the war, he turned his attention to the division of Germany and the oppression of people under the communist regime in East Germany. In 1962, he opened the Checkpoint Charlie Museum near the famous crossing point in the Berlin Wall. The museum became a symbol of resistance against the East German regime and a beacon of hope for those seeking freedom. It houses a collection of items related to escape attempts, including homemade hot air balloons, tunneling tools, and modified vehicles. Hildebrandt wrote several books about the Berlin Wall and the struggle for freedom in East Germany. He remained active in his work for the museum and the cause of freedom until his death in 2004. His contributions to preserving the history of the Berlin Wall and the Cold War era have been widely recognized." // Germany (East) -- History -- Uprising, 1953.
