About This Item
Fowler & Wells, New York: 1883., 1883 pp. 200, (1) [List of Illustrations], (8) [Publisher's catalogue]. Numerous illustrations. 8vo. Original full brown cloth embossed binding. Spine decorated in gold gilt. Printed bookplate for F.B. Ellis, Duncannon, PA. Ellis was a student at Lafayette College, Class of 1891. An important and popular work, which first appeared as 'Essays on the Anatomy of Painting'. It compares the muscles and expressions in man with those of animals. In this post-Darwin edition the connection with physinogomy and phrenology was made manifest (with the aid of the addition of some woodcuts from the various Fowler & Wells phrenological publications). Its influence on art (especially in England) is recognized, but deserves further study. A very nice copy of a fascinating book. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! OCC 12. Language: eng. Hardcover. Very Good.
