New York: Random House, 1954. Limited Edition. Cloth. Fine/very good. Signed limited edition of A Fable by William Faulkner.. Octavo, 437pp. Publisher's blue cloth, title printed on spine, crosses stamped on cover in blue and white. Stated "first printing" on copyright page. Top edge dyed blue. Clean pages, no extraneous marks, a fine example. Original glassine jacket, long closed tears along top edge. In the publisher's slipcase, title printed on label, light toning to upper edge, touch of shelf wear to the side panels, a very good example. Signed on the limitation page by the author, this being number 473 of 1000 copies. William Faulkner (1897-1962) was a two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning author, recognized for A Fable in 1955 and The Reivers in 1963. The Sound and the Fury, As I Lay Dying, and Light in August were recognized by The Modern Library on their 1998 list of 100 Best English-language Novels of the 20th Century. Faulkner primarily set his stories in the American South, many of which took place in the fictional Yoknapatawpha County. Faulkner considered A Fable to be his masterpiece, describing it as "...the best work of my life and maybe of my time.
Synopsis
A Fable is a novel written in 1954 by the American author William Faulkner, which won him both the Pulitzer prize and the National Book Award in 1955. Despite these recognitions, however, the novel received mixed critical reviews and a reputation as one of Faulkner's lesser works . The author, on the other hand, spent over a decade and tremendous effort on A Fable, and considered it his masterpiece when it was completed. Historically, it can be seen as a precursor to Catch 22.
