About This Item
Lausanne: Andre & Pierre Gonin, 1959. First Edition . Custom Binding. Near Fine. Elephant Folio - over 15" - 23" tall. Lurcat, Jean. Lausanne: Andre & Pierre Gonin, 1959. First edition, exemplaire # 97 of 155. Elephant Folio size, at 15 1/4" tall. Illustrated with 34 color lithographs, of which five are double- page, by Jean Lurcat, who has signed at the colophon along with publisher Pierre Gonin. Additionally signed and inscribed on the flyleaf by Lurcat with an abstract sketch dated 1960. Lurcat has also heightened the five double-page lithographs by hand. Rives pur chiffon paper. The edition was initially loose-bound; this example has been stunningly custom hand-bound by Atelier Ch. Muller in white morocco with red morocco onlays of Lurcat-style leaves, lettering stamped in red, wide morocco turn-ins, pictorial endpapers. See scans. Corners just faintly bumped, else Near Fine, a large and rather dazzling piece. Beautiful and fitting artwork by Lurcat to match the mood of La Fable du Monde, a poem by Jules Supervielle, a spiritual and rather zenny poet and author who at once sensed the depth and enigma of the universe yet strove to "simplify" his complex feelings in his work because of his strong wish to involve the reader in what he felt. One passage from La Fable du Monde [online translation]: "Intoxication to create, all to see succeeding, Not to have not to start and to finish, To suddenly deliver the rivers and the stones, hearts leaves, eyes, hearts captive. All escapes to me, the floods and the grounds in bulk, Mix currents, alive madnesses, But one of my glances returns calms it of a lake, Preserving below what one needs for it life." With the custom binding and the additional Lurcat signature and sketch, a unique volume. l-lng1
