About This Item

Weimar, Germany: Bernh. Friedr. Voigt, 1844. quarter cloth over marbled paper-covered boards. Papermaking. small 8vo. quarter cloth over marbled paper-covered boards. xxviii, 371, (2) pages, followed by four folding plates. Fifth edition. (Wolfe p.116-117). Volume 2 only. Minor shelf-wear. Minor discoloration and foxing throughout. Four folding plates at rear. A lovely copy of this scarce book on bookbinding. Thon first issued his Die Kunst Bucher zum Bindenin 1820, a book which contained a short chapter on making colored papers (including marbled papers). When the work was reissued, it was done in two separate volumes with the second volume devoted entirely to the subject of decorated paper. Wolfe calls this work "possibly the first known attempt to explain comprehensively all of the methods and facets of colored paper." The first three chapters of nearly 150 pages explain the details of making the paper including a section on the gums used. Additional chapters cover marbling, wall paper, polished gold and silver paper.

About Oak Knoll Books/Oak Knoll Press

Oak Knoll Books was founded in 1976 by Bob Fleck, a chemical engineer by training, who let his hobby get the best of him. Somehow making oil refineries more efficient using mathematics and computers paled in comparison to the joy of handling books. Oak Knoll Press, the second part of the business, was established in 1978 as a logical extension of Oak Knoll Books. Oak Knoll Books is a thriving company that maintains an inventory of about 20,000 titles. Our main specialties are books about bibliography, book collecting, book design, book illustration, book selling, bookbinding, bookplates, children's books, Delaware books, fine press books, forgery, graphic arts, libraries, literary criticism, marbling, papermaking, printing history, publishing, typography & type specimens, and writing & calligraphy - plus books about the history of all of these fields.
