About This Item

New York: George P. Putnam, 155 Broadway, 1852. Octavo, 495 pages. FIRST U.S. EDITION, following the two-volume London edition published by John Murray the same year. Impressions of various features of Paris, viewed during a visit by the author in 1851. Head was a former Lieutenant-Governor of Upper Canada. Sections include the Place de la Bastille, the poor, Jardin des Plantes, Gardens of the Tuileries, Hôtel des Invalides, Versailles, Imprimerie Nationale, Hospice des Enfans Trouvés, the Elysée, Institution Nationale des Sourds-Muets, Hospice des Femmes Incurables, École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées, &c. There is significant food information, including a chapter on the Abattoir des Cochons and the Abattoir de Montmartre, Cafés, and the Halle aux Vin. There is also a discussion of The Stroll, as the flaneur is an inseparable feature of the Paris streetscape, and the Dog Market. A bit of light foxing internally, otherwise tight and clean. In publisher's green cloth, with blind-stamped border and the title illustrated in gilt.
