About This Item
New York:: Grosset & Dunlap, 1926.. Reprint Edition.. Hardbound . BINDING/CONDITION: green 'tweed' binding with vignette; top edge tinted dark; a Very Good book, with a Very Good dust jacket.. small 8vo (7.75 inches tall) . Illustrated endpapers. Description: The Grosset and Dunlap reprints of Terhune's dog stories were issued in two different formats. The earlier issue was done in cloth with the head of a collie blind stamped on the front cover. The endpapers for that series featured two dogs on the left hand page with a stream or road separating them from a single 'windswept' collie on the right hand side. This listing is for a copy form the later series issue which featured dust jackets by noted wildlife artist Bob Kuhn. The binding was either solid color cloth or 'tweed' with a vignette of two collies running. The endpaper scene shows those same two collies on the left hand, and the right hand side shows a single collie leaping into a pond. This scene (reproduced in black and white) is from one of Kuhn's paintings done for this series. The two halves of this painting were used for two different dust jackets (The Critter and Other Dogs and The Way of a Dog). The hero of this story is Mars, who at the command of his master performs a truly amazing feat.. Note that the only printed date is the 1926 copyright; this circa 1970.
