About This Item

New York City, NY: Doubleday, 1991. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. Fine/Fine Dust Jacket.. New York City, NY: Doubleday, 1991. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. First Edition/First Printing. 500 pages. The author's breakthrough novel. Ben Okri's finest achievement. The first appearance of the title in the United States in its First Printing and First-State DJ (NO "Winner of the 1991 Booker Prize" imprint). Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, of which there are several. Published in a small and limited first print run by Doubleday Books as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now rare. Presents Ben Okri's "The Famished Road". His opalescent masterpiece, the cycle of life, death, and rebirth evoked vividly with the force of memory, myth, and local color. "The narrator is a spirit-child who exists between life and death, destined to an endless cycle of death and rebirth. But this time, born with a smile on his face, Azaro begins to fall in love with life and to rebel against his fate. The story the child tells flows between the difficulties of the land of the living and the carefree world of spirits. Infuses a vivid portrait of an unnamed West African country with the rich traditions of African mythology. A powerfully haunting masterpiece" (Publisher's blurb). An absolute "must-have" title for Ben Okri collectors. This title is a great book. This copy comes with the author's unique, not just special, 3.5 X 2.5 inch bookplate that is very prominently, elaborately, and beautifully signed, dated, placed, and inscribed in black pen-marker by the author: "Wishing you a wonderful journey on the great road. Ben Okri 7-9-93 London". There is no recipient named. The elegant bookplate is enclosed within its own plastic sleeve and laid-in. This is the only copy (with uniquely Signed Bookplate) of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing/First-State DJ (American) available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. It is the most beautiful bookplate-signed copy we have ever seen. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws or are in innumerable subsequent printings yet command many hundreds of dollars more. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare, one-of-a-kind signed copy thus. Winner of the Booker Prize for "The Famished Road" in 1991. One of the greatest writers of the 20th century and our time. A fine collectible copy. . ISBN 0385424760.

Synopsis

Ben Okri is a Nigerian poet and novelist who is often described as one of Africa's greatest writers. The Famished Road is the 1991 winner of the Man Booker prize. This unusual story is set in the ghetto of an unnamed city in West Africa. The narrator-protagonist Azaro is about seven years of age who flits between the spirit world of dreams and the heart-wrenching slums of poverty. He is described as an abiku or spirit-child. The abiku are said to be constantly coming and going between our world and the spirit-world. But when the newly-born Azaro first sees the sad and beautiful face of his mother, he decides to stop the unrelenting cycle of dying and being reborn. He decides to stay among the living. The story follows him as he tries to live his life, always aware of the spirits trying to bring him back. Okri captivates the reader with this richly descriptive novel.

Good, but perhaps a little too prone to wander into surrealism for some.
