About This Item

Del Monte, CA: Hotel Del Monte, 1936. First Edition. 8vo. 43 pp. Illustrations by Paul Whitman. Publisher's color illustrated wrappers in near fine condition (light foxing and age toning to covers; minor wear to extremities). The epicurian delights of those who really like to know what to eat, in the hope that the tea room, the quick lunch counter and the hamburger stand will take their place along with the vanishing American and the forgotten man. A selection of recipes by famous people including Robinson Jeffers ("Poetic License"), John Steinbeck ("Tortilla Flat"), Gelett Burgess ("Baked Apples, Hoosier Style"), Ben Hecht ("Lobster Diable"), Zane Grey ("My Strawberry Roan"), Rube Goldberg ("Veal Cutlets a la Baseball"), Walt Disney ("Silly Symphony Souffle"), Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt ("The President's Sunday Dinner"), Gertrude Stein ("Is a Rose Is a Rose Is a Rose"), Edgar Rice Burroughs ("Tarzan to the Rescue") and many more. All recipes were tested and sampled by a group of competent gourmets who gathered for that specific purpose at Hotel Del Monte.
