The third impression of Thomas Hardy's one-act play, published in the same month as the first edition, and illustrated with a frontispiece.Subtitled, 'A New Version Of An Old Story Arranged As A Play For Mummers In One Act Requiring No Theatre Or Scenery', alongside publication the work was performed in London and Glastonbury, and a slightly revised and expanded version published in 1924.Hardy began writing the tragedy in 1916 following a visit to Cornwall with his wife, Florence Dugdale.With a gift inscription, dated Christmas 1923, to the front free endpaper. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Bumping to back strip head and tail. Inscription to front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright. Very Good Indeed
