First American edition, 2 volumes, large 8vo, pp. x, [4], 587; x, [2], 729, [1], 4; frontispieces, 16 color plates after the author's sketches, four color maps laid into chemise mounted to front pastedown, black and white text illustrations, many photographic, throughout; publisher's dark brown decorative cloth stamped in gilt, green, red, and silver, t.e.g.; spines a touch cocked, minor ink staining to volume II bottom textblock edge, large dark stain on volume II back cover; bookplate of John S. and Bessie S. Ely on front pastedowns (some offsetting) with gift inscription dated 1897 on front free endpapers; both title pages starting to loosen, else interior about fine. A nice set with hinges still intact. English translation of Fram over polhavet, den norske polarfaerd 1893-96, the narrative based on Nansen's investigation of the polar basin north of Eurasia by drifting in the ice currents from the New Siberian Islands northwest toward the Pole; "every detail...was worked out by Nansen himself and went absolutely according to plan" (PMM 384).
