"FARTHEST NORTH - Being the Record of a Voyage of Exploration of the Ship 'Fram' 1893-96 and of a Fifteen Months' Sleigh Journey by Dr. Nansen and Lieut. Johansen" by Fridtjof Nansen. 1897 1st edition; Archibald Constable and Company; Westminster, UK. Complete set in two volumes. A custom slip case has been made to house the volumes. The set is rchly illustrated with "about 120 full page and numerous text illustrations" as well as 16 color plates "in facsimile from Dr. Nansen's own sketches." There are also photogravures, two folding color maps at the back of each volume (four color maps total), and an "etched portrait" frontispiece of Nansen in volume I. All folding maps are present and securely attached; all color plates are present. Also included is an Appendix by Otto Sverdrup, Captain of the 'Fram.' Each volume comes with a clear, protective sleeve over the covers. Found within the pages was an original order form for the book "Ice-Bound on Kolguev" from the same publisher.

VOLUME I: Introduction; Preparations and Equipment; The Start; Farewell to Norway; Voyage through the Kara Sea; The Winter Night; The Spring and Summer of 1894; Second Autumn in the Ice.
VOLUME II: We Prepare for the Sleigh Expedition; The New Year 1895; We Make a Start; We Say Goodbye to the Fram; A Hard Strugle; By Sledge and Kayak; Land at Last; The New Year, 1896; The Journey Southwards; Report of Captain Otto Sverdrup; Conclusion.
Condition:
Overall the set is in Good condition. VOLUME I: there are a few light stains on the covers; a bit of mild mottling to the cloth on the covers (these are tiny patches where the green cloth color has faded...these are not stains); tight binding with no loose pages; crack at front hinge between end paper and pastedown - despite the crack, the front cover is still firmly attached; back cover firmly attached; occasional mild foxing to the pages; smudge at top-left corner of front end paper; light tanning to front end paper, heavier tanning to rear end papers. VOLUME II: some mottling to the cloth on the covers; small ding/dent at the left edge of the back cover; crack at front and rear hinges between the end papers and pastedowns resulting in the covers being shaky; occasional mild foxing to the pages; tanning to end papers; smudge/stain at upper-outer corner (on both sides) of the last folding map; page xiii has a 2" tear at the outer edge; list of maps page has a 1" tear at outer edge.
