Phaidon Press. London. 1975. Near fine First Edition with green boards and gilt lettering to spine.Spine slightly bumped with some fading at bottom of boards. Inscribed on half title page by William P. Cumming. Very good clipped jacket has minor shelf wear that is protected with a removable mylar cover. William Cumming (1900 - 1989) was a historian of cartography and professor emeritus of English at Davidson College. Prof. Cumming selected and wrote captions for 240 pre-1800 illustrations of people, events, battles, and maps. Full-page color reproductions are included of such well-known works as John Singleton Copley's Samuel Adams and Paul Revere, the presentation of the Declaration of Independence to Congress by John Trumbull, Gilbert Stuart's head of Washington, and Van Blarenberghe's surrender at Yorktown.
