Text in French, small 4to, approximately 210 x 160 mm, 8½ x 6¼ inches, 12 full page engravings of hawks, and 2 woodcuts of L'Anatomie des oyseaux in the text, one folding plate of hawking implements, LACKING 4 PLATES OF IMPLEMENTS AT PAGE 296 as usual, which seem to be often missing, now supplied in facsimiles and tipped in at rear after final page (slightly smaller than the original pages), decorated intials and headpieces. Pages: LA FAUCONNERIE: [8], 1-334, pages 327-328 repeated, no duplication of text, [8]; LA FAUCONNERIE DU ROY: [12], 1- 51, [1]; DISCOURS DE CHASSE: [6], 55- 107, [1]; LETTRES DE PHILOIERAX: [10], 119-173, [1]. Bound in full 19th century panelled calf, gilt lettering and decoration to spine, gilt decoration and blind decoration to covers, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Binding lightly rubbed, upper hinge beginning to crack at head and tail, covers still firmly attached, top outer corner of folding plate repaired, no loss to image, tiny closed tear to margin of 2 plates and 1 text page, neatly repaired, no loss to image or text, 3 small pale stains to margins of 2 images (see attached image), 2 lower margins slightly ragged, not affecting text or images, some show through and offset from images, occasional pale age-browning including title page, pale foxing to many margins, otherwise a very good copy (4 implements plates in facsimile as noted). First published in 1599, this edition of 1643 is not recorded in James Edmund Harting, Bibliotheca Accipitraria, page 80-82; nor in Schwerdt, Hunting, Hawking and Shooting, Volume I, page 43, but they both record an edition of 1644 which collates the same as ours. There are copies of the 1643 edition held in National Library of Scotland and Bodleian Library, Oxford, also John Evelyn had a copy in his library (see John Evelyn A Study in Bibliophily, by Geoffrey Keynes, page 299).
