About This Item
Edinburgh and London: Archibald Constable and Company; Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme and Brown - and White, Cochrane and Co, 1813 A very good copy of the scarce 1st edition in contemporary half morocco binding. George Low arrived in Orkney to tutor in Stromness and later became the Minister of Birsay and Harray. He had a lifelong interest in natural history and was asked to accompany Sir Joseph Banks and Dr Solander when they landed in Orkney returning from Cooke's last voyage. Joseph Banks introduced him to Pennant and he drew on his knowledge and support in classifying the fauna that he saw. He died in 1795 - and the work was published by William Elford Leach, who acted as editor, noting that Pennant had also done some revisions. This copy is red morocco leather with marbled boards, endpapers and page edges. The spine has small raised bands with decorative gilt compartments and titles. The binding is sound and clean with some general rubbing to edges, including spine joints, and corners. Contents: 2 initial blanks; title page; dedication to Joseph Banks; advertisement by the editor; author's preface; glossary; contents listing (pp i-xx); Text pp 1-230; 2 final blanks. The contents are clean with the occasional light spot or mark. Paper is lightly toned.
