(viii), 453pp. First American Edition. Condition: d/j sunned on spine end and partial top of front; minor soiling to rear flap. Book is clean, tight and unmarked. Novelist Edith Wharton (1862-1937), was best known for her depictions of the monied classes of Gilded Age New York in her many novels, including the Pulitzer-winning Age of Innocence (1920) and The House of Mirth ( 1905 ), but she was also a prolific short story writer. Literary biographer Cynthia Griffin Wolff, Professor of English at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, explores works in both genres, delving into the psychological dimensions behind the sometime-resident of western Massachusetts, whom she calls, " ...the most original and important woman novelist in American literature, and one of the half-dozen greatest novelists America has produced.". First American Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Very Good.
