About This Item

London: Chatto & Windus, 1907. Cloth. Very Good Indeed. 8" by 5". None. A first edition of a delightful psychological musing by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland'. The first edition of the work. With an introduction by English hymn writer and clergyman, William H. Draper. The work was simultaneously published in quarter cloth for 1s. and morocco for 2s. This fascinating lecture by Carroll (Charles Dodgson) is a rare example of the famously timid author's public speaking and was delivered to a clergy in Derbyshire in 1884. Upon completion of the speech, Dodgson handed the script (in his famous purple ink) to Draper, who, several years later, went on to have the work published. After the lecture was finished, it was during Charles Dodgson's stay in this vicarage when he was publicly outed as Lewis Carroll, author of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The fascinating lecture highlights the importance of constant mental stimulation, drawing the analogy between correctly feeding the body, to correctly 'feeding' the mind with information and knowledge. In a quarter cloth binding. Externally generally smart; edges are a little discoloured, and there is a mark to the spine. Ownership inscription to the front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Very Good Indeed
