The first volume illustrated with a few full-page maps and a fold-out map printed in red and black at the end of the volume. The second volume with the same map as the first, and the third volume illustrated with a chart and the same map in the rear. Hammond and Anderson A5f i-iii. First printings of the second edition of Tolkien's landmark work. One of the earliest works of epic fantasy, Tolkien's series would go on to help shape the next few generations of modern fantasy writers. The world of Middle Earth is beautifully developed in this series concerning friendship, and the power of the natural world against toxic industrialization. The jackets with discreet toning to the top edges of their flaps and their reverses, the slipcase with a few hints of rubbing, overall a stunning set.

Synopsis

The Fellowship of the Ring is the first of three volumes of the epic novel The Lord of the Rings by the English author J. R. R. Tolkien. It takes place in the fictional universe Middle-earth. It was originally published on July 29, 1954 in the United Kingdom. The volume consists of a Prologue "Concerning Hobbits, and other matters" followed by Book I and Book II. Tolkien's publisher worried that the 'high-fantasy' novel wouldn't sell, and broke the text into three volumes to cut costs: The Fellowship of the Ring , The Two Towers , and The Return of the King . Because the popularity had not been tested, initial print runs on the trilogy were low, making first states scarce and valuable.

Reviews

On Jul 14 2022, a reader said:
The Lord of the Rings is in my opinion the best story in the fantasy genre. The amount of detail that Tolkien pours into his work brings fictional characters, histories, and cultures to life. I have never read another book in this genre with the same level of craftsmanship.
On Dec 4 2014, a reader said:
The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings are simply fantastic, I would recommend them to one and all. I have read them numerous times and much better than the movies which are good.
