About This Item

New York: Westminster / Premiere World Recording. Very Good Vinyl Record/Very Good Record Sleeve. 1958. 33 1/3 RPM LP VINYL RECORD. . This very rare LP record of North African folk music features recordings of Algerian rebels, recorded in Algeria by NBC correspondents Herb Greer and Peter Throckmorton in 1957. The tapes, portions originally heard on the NBC program INSIDE REBEL ALGERIA on NBC's OUTLOOK in 1958., were recorded in caves, ruined farmhouses, and the forests of the Atlas mountains during lulls in the fighting of the French-Algerian war. It is believed the record was withdrawn soon after issue by Westminster Records due to protests by the French government, thus its scarcity. FIGHTING SONGS OF THE ALGERIAN REBELS, Westminster / Premiere World Recording, released in 1958, Long Play, Hi-Fi WF 12006. SIDE ONE: 1 From the Heights of Our Mountains / 2 The Cruel Vineyards / 3 Traditional Love Song / 4 Mountain Dance / 5 Spanish Foreign Legion Songs / 6 Grace Be Upon You / 7 Dance of the Wheat SIDE TWO: 1 Soldier Conga / 2 Remember the Dead! / 3 From the Mountains, We'll March to Independence / 4 There is No God but God / 5 The French General's Wife / 6 Nadira / 7 The Sweet Water. CONDITION NOTES: a Very Good Vinyl Record, meaning there is light surface wear, with some areas of surface noise, but overall the records plays well and still sounds good. (High Fidelity magazine reviewed the record in 1958 and noted then that the recordings were of a high quality for field recordings)). The sleeve is clean and unmarked, showing only darkening at edges from aging. It features a photo to the front of an Algerian soldier, and an additional photo at rear, along with liner notes by Peter Throckmorton. .
