About This Item

yours sincerely" showing her three quarters length as a young girl, 6½" x 4¼", no place, 25th September Marie Lloyd was a music hall singer, comedian and musical theatre actress. She was best known for her performances of songs such as "The Boy I Love Is Up in the Gallery", "My Old Man (Said Follow the Van)" and "Oh Mr Porter What Shall I Do". She received both criticism and praise for her use of innuendo and double entendre during her performances, but enjoyed a long and prosperous career, during which she was affectionately called the "Queen of the Music Hall". Her ability to add lewdness to the most innocent of lyrics led to frequent clashes with the then guardians of morality. Legend has it that when the moralists objected to her song "I sits among the cabbages and peas", with its daring - for the context - reference to urinating, she transformed the lyrics, and sang instead "I sits among the cabbages and leeks" to roars of laughter from her adoring audience. W. V. Amey was a Photographic studio on Landport which flourished from 1875 to 1898.
