Internally very good subject to moderate browning and dustiness and a few small stains to the title page (couple mirrored on inside front cover) . Binding firm. Cover is somewhat shelfworn and a little scuffed with a small stain; the Claud Fraser design on the front cover is reasonably bright.

Spine with gilt ruled lines, floral design and lettering. Front board with ruled panels and floral designs, all in gilt Single gilt ruled border to the rear board and board edges. Gilt inner dentelles. Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. Armorial bookplate of noted author of books on folklore and topography, Sir George Laurence Gomme (1853 - 1916) on the front pastedown. Some offsetting to the endpapers from the leather turn-ins. A little rubbing to the extremities and the spine faded to an attractive brown but overall still a lovely copy of this scarce work in a fine quality binding. The binding is unsigned but is certainly the work of a master bookbinder.

Previous owner name neatly written on blank free endpapers and a name clipped from the top of the title pages, otherwise very good, bright and clean copies throughout. Early full tan calf bindings with raised bands to the spines. Compartments double gilt ruled. Red title labels, gilt. Some minor wear to the extremities but overall very good and attractive bindings. ---- Complete as published, these first two volumes of Stern's Sermons of Mr. Yorrick, published anonymously in 1760, were added to at a later date with another five volumes issued between 1766 and 1769.

1691 Japanese Handwritten Noh Play Theater Mask Demons Warrior Japan Shimogakari

An interesting Edo woodblock-print of 'Noh Chant Collections' from the early 17th century. Noh chants were adopted from Buddhist prayers and went with the musical background of Noh plays, which to this day is one of the most important performing arts in Japan. Noh plays borrowed from other arts with masks, music, and even structure. A normal Noh piece has five plays, god, warrior, woman, living person, and demon, which are all grouped into three dramatic units.
This rare four volume collection from 1691 is written in a column handwritten format with furigana usage for easier reading!

A complete set of what must have been one of the most impressive bibliographical publications of 19th Century France - indeed Europe. Copiously illustrated with facsimiles and colour reproductions, (many of which are fold-out and impressively large) of remarkable manuscripts and bindings throughout history. In contemporary 1/4 calf with raised bands and blue labels at one stage this set must have been particularly eye-catching but sadly time has taken its toll somewhat. In various states of condition ranging from Good/VG to Fair only. Most with substantial off-setting in places, many tissue-guards missing from the plates.
