About This Item
Washington, 1862. unbound. Outstanding letter, three pages, 9.75 x 8 inches, Washington, August 12, 1862. Written to Naval Captain (later Admiral) J. Thomas Turner, whose son was killed while a Capt. in the 4th Reg., U.S. infantry. Lee has painstakingly supplied (in manuscript) the correct form which Turner must use when he petitions the Government for his dead son's property, in part: "...In case of no widow or child, the father is sole heir. There is no bounty, or bounty laws to commissioned officers. The claim is for 'arears of pay,' in this form [COMPLETES FORM]. I wish I knew how to offer you a word of sincere sympathy...but I know how idle words are...I have written Genl. Roberts, chief of Pope's cavalry and a compatriot of ours (concerning your family). He will do what he can for their predicament and comfort..." Very good condition.

Civil War Major who, after becoming injured while serving under General Pope, was appointed Judge Advocate of the Union Army (1862).
