About This Item

Privately Printed [at the Tragara Press], 1996. Limited Edition. Wraps. Fine. One of 100 numbered copies, octavo size, 45 pp., with a short ANS by Stephen Stuart-Smith. George Granville Barker (1913-1991), poet, was "partly associated with the New Apocalyptics movement, which reacted against 1930s realism with surrealistic and mythical themes. However, his characteristically independent idiosyncrasies set him off as an individual in his own right" (n.b., quote from Wiki).

This slim volume, by George Barker's friend of sixty years, David Gascoyne, "represents a celebration of [his] life and achievement" (n.b., from Introduction). Privately printed by Alan Anderson for Alan Clodd, noted publisher and book collector.

___DESCRIPTION: Turquoise wraps, a white paper label with black lettering on the front, yapped edges, frontispiece a reproduction of a photograph of George Barker (about 1940), facing p. 24 a reproduction of a photograph of David Gascoyne (about 1936); hand-set Bembo type on Teton paper, octavo size (9 11/16" by 6 1/2"), pagination: [1-4] 5-42 [2, blanks] [1, colophon]. With a short ANS by Stephen Stuart-Smith to the original owner, on a small slip of paper with the letterhead of the Enitharmon Press.

___CONDITION: Fine overall, the wraps clean and without wear, straight corners, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; head and tail of the spine gently bumped, else fine. The ANS fine, clean and without wear.

___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details.
