About This Item

New York: Knopf, 2010. First edition. Hardcover. Fine/fine. First edition, first printing. A fine, fresh apparently unread copy in equally fine dust jacket. Hardcover. 299 pp. with index. Pulitzer Prize-winning author of "Founding Brothers" brings America's preeminent first couple to life in this moving and illuminating narrative that sweeps through the American Revolution and the republic's tenuous early years. The first meeting between the two---John was twenty four and Abigail fifteen--was inauspicious and each was entirely unimpressed with each other. They soon, however, started a passionate correspondence that resulted in their marriage five years later. Over the decades, they were apart more than they were together, with John going to Philadelphia for the Continental Congress and later to France as minister to the court along side Benjamin Franklin. Abigail's health prevented her from joining him when he was elected the new nation's first Vice President; the two would be together for John's Presidency and were the first residents of the partially completed White House.
