About This Item

New York: J. J. Augustin Publisher, [1938]., 1938. First edition. First edition. 8vo. Cloth, titles and design stamped in white on front cover and spine, maps on front and rear endpapers, xii, 155 pp., frontispiece, foreword, illustrated from photographs, of various Pueblo Indians and their lands, bibliography. Interesting general history of the Pueblo Indians of Arizona and New Mexico. Information on customs, historical developments, dramatic episodes and unique philosophies of life. Attractive first edition with interesting markings from unidentified early owner, who faintly inks or pencils brief phrases at the bottom of about a dozen pages, for instance at foot of title page drawing arrow to the Native American woman in frontispiece photograph and noting, "This is our friend Elsie from Shipauloir [?] / She is Alice's half sister" and alongside another closeup of a woman's hands weaving a basket notes "This is Elsie," another photo shows a Native American woman holding a large pot on her head, and the inked note states "My black bowl;" usually these notes simply identify a place when the photo's caption is cryptic, but all reflect intimate familiarity with the area and its people. Tiny bump to foot of spine and light wear to corners, else a very good clean copy in dust jacket with small chips to the spine ends, light wear to the corners and minor nicks, chips and wear to the extremities and spine panel.
