About This Item
Boston: The Four Seas Company, 1915. First Edition, Presumed 2nd Issue. Boards. Fine/Near Fine. 12mo (7 1/8" x 5"), brown cardboard with brown wrappers--now Mylar-protected--and black lettering on spine of wrapper and on its front cover, [1-8], 9-47 pages. Stephen Vincent Benét /b ne / (July 22, 1898 - March 13, 1943) was an American poet, short story writer, and novelist. His first book of poetry was this volume: Five Men and Pompey. He is best known for his book-length narrative poem of the American Civil War John Brown's Body (1928), for which he won a Pulitzer Prize in 1929, and for the short stories "The Devil and Daniel Webster" (1936) and "By the Waters of Babylon" (1937). In 2009, The Library of America selected Benét's story "The King of the Cats" (1929) for inclusion in its two-century retrospective of American Fantastic Tales edited by Peter Straub. Apart from one tiny hole in the lower left of the brown dustwrapper and slight losses along the gutter of the front cover beneath the wrapper which is attached to the spine, this is an EXTRAORDINARILY FINE COPY.
