About This Item

London: Hodder and Stoughton. August 1942. First edition, first printing. First edition, first printing. Original light blue cloth with black titles to upper board and spine, in dustwrapper. Illustrated with line drawings throughout by Eileen A. Soper. A very good copy, the binding firm with the usual bumping of the thin boards and mottling to the blue cloth. The contents, with a previous owner's name to the front endpaper and only the occasional foxing spot are otherwise clean throughout. Complete with the lightly rubbed dustwrapper that has a few tiny nicks at the spine tips and a single short closed tear (without loss) to the lower spine fold. The dustwrapper remains very clean and bright, albeit heavily faded to the red lettering on the spine, and entirely without repair or restoration. Not price-clipped (5/- net to the lower front flap). An attractive, unsophisticated example, scarce thus. The first edition, first printing of the first adventure of the Famous Five. (Summerfield, Tony: Enid Blyton, An Illustrated Bibliography, Part 1, p.58.) Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. Lucius Books welcomes direct contact with our customers.

Synopsis

"Ah, the Famous Five! In this first book, we open with Julian, Dick and Anne at home with their parents, chatting around the breakfast table. Julian asks his mother if they're going to Polseath as usual for the summer holidays—but to the childrens' surprise their parents have decided they want to go away on their own to Scotland. The children must go to stay with their Aunt Fanny and Uncle Quentin, down by the sea at Kirrin Bay. They have a daughter by the name of Georgina, who is very lonely and could do with the company of a few cousins. And so plans are made, and they all pile into the car and set off." THE BEST FOR A FIRST READ!

Enid’s books were the catalyst which encouraged me to start reading more than 50 years ago. Thank you, Enid. The BBC, many libraries, local authorities and alleged educational experts have been completely wrong about the worth of the Blyton works. I can remember having substantial difficulty obtaining the original books as so many places would not stock them. The stories are great to read for their simplicity and straightforwardness.

When one did find copies of the book they were quite expensive all those years ago but great to own. I loved the letter on the back cover from Enid and the physical appearance of the book which I treasured as a youngster with the way the books were produced then which made them somehow much easier to read.

It’s a delight to read the stories again in middle age although recent editing has diminished some of the memories I have of the original editions and words used then (but I am now getting old). Never mind… these books remain one of my best friends for life: they began my reading adventure so do read these special adventures for yourselves.
