Blind stamped maroon boards with Author's name on front cover with victorian designs. Title on gilt background blind stamped on spine. Boards in good condition. Please not publishing error on Title page regarding publishers line and location. (see photo) pages are somewhat brittle with age, and some early pages have been repaired with archival tape. Sewn binding still intact. No missing pages. Frontispiece is an engraved print opposite the title page.
This novel, first published in 1863, was an instant hit because of public interest in fanciful tales of African exploration, which was at it height. Verne skillfully created a story line of adventure and plot twists mixed with technical, geographic and historical descriptions. This novel was Verne's first commercial success. Mylar protected.
