About This Item
Hardcover with dust jacket, published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1966. This is a book club edition from 1966. The dust jacket is intact and is not price clipped - 'Book Club Edition' is printed on the lower corner of the front flap. This is one of the few books that was awarded both the Pulitzer and National Book Award. Basis for the 1968 John Frankenheimer film starring Alan Bates and Dirk Bogarde. The dust jacket has been protected with a clear, removable cover. There's a short closed tear at the left side near the spine, about 1/2 inch long, and another closed tear on the middle of the bottom edge, also about 1/2 inch long. Some creases to the adjacent area at the heel of the spine as well. Some rubbing wear marks to the front panel of the jacket. Olive colored cloth covered boards with the title and author name in black and orange on the spine. All lettering on the boards is crisp and not rubbed or worn. Corners of the boards are not bumped or creased. Bump mark on the bottom edge of the back board, divot of about 1/32". 335 pages, rough edged text block, topstain shows some fading. No former ownership marks, no writing on the text pages. Not a library discard. Very nicely printed considering it is a book club copy. Attached photo is of the copy we have in our inventory.
Synopsis
Bernard Malamud was born in Brooklyn, New York, and was an author of novels and short stories. His novel, The Eighth Day was the winner of the National Book Awards as well as the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1967. In this fictionalized account of a true story regarding a viciously anti-Semitic incident, the protagonist, Yakov Bok, a poor Jew, travels to Kiev to try to change his life situation and fortunes. He tries to pass for a Gentile and is hired on as a supervisor of a brick-making factory. Soon, there is a murder of a Christian child and Bok’s Jewishness is discovered; he is unjustly imprisoned for the murder. He experiences torture and abuse at the hands of his jailers and slowly comes to realize his faith in the potential humanity of Christians and Jews alike. The novel employs rich, complex characters and an intellectual message regarding the need for humane political actions.
