Michie, who was awared a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1997, argues that the body of the fictional Victorian heroine is the "locus of representation and textuality" for feminist readers. She examines these fictional bodies in relation to food, hunger, work, and prostitution and considers general problems of heroine description in an era which mandated that most of a woman's body should be "erased" from a text. The final chapter concludes that contemporary feminist poets who seek to present women's bodies "unmediated" by male desire often trap themselves in mirror images of what they seek to avoid. The book abounds in fresh insights. Recommended.
