First Edition. 8vo., 182pp.; G+; bound in original blind- and gilt-stamped brown cloth, gilt lettering; cover of tail of spine coming loose, head of spine missing, chips to rest of spine; rubbing, bumping, and fraying to corners, board edges; some water damage, cloth on boards has some waviness and air-pockets, lower edge of ffep through title page, page 174-end; water damage to the corners and lower edges of plates; pencil writing to endpapers; colored frontis and five b/w plates; Alcott's first book, a collection of fables about nature she wrote at age 16 for her friend and neighbor Ellen Emerson, the daughter of Ralph Waldo Emerson. It was published in an edition of 1600 copies.; KS consignment. NOTE: Shelved in Room G. 1279634. Special Collections.
Synopsis
Flower fables was the first work published by Louisa May Alcott and appeared on December 4, 1849. The book was a compilation of fanciful stories first written seven years earlier for Ellen Emerson. The book was published in an edition of 1600 and apparently sold well although Alcott received only about $35 from the Boston publisher, George Briggs.
