Barker was "a devotee of the Pre-Raphaelites, particularly Edward Burne-Jones, and her work owes a debt to Beatrix Potter and Kate Greenaway... Her fairy books remain very popular and have been collected in many anthologies" (ODNB). Mary Cicely Barker (1895-1973) began this seasonal poetry series in 1923 with Flower Fairies of the Spring, a popular response to the interest in fairies generated by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's The Coming of Fairies (1922). The Summer volume was published in 1925 and the Winter volume was posthumously published in 1985. Duodecimo. Original grey decorated boards with pictorial onlay in colour, spine and front cover lettered in brown, blue illustrated endpapers. With dust jacket. Illustrated half-title and frontispiece, 24 colour plates, all by the author. Front pastedown with bookseller's ticket of J. J. Waterfall, Skipton; pagination provided in pencil. Rubbing to lower edge, foxing to edges, toning to contents, illustrations bright. A very good copy in like dust jacket, price-clipped with later price stamped on front flap, a little soiled, chips to fold ends with couple of short closed tears.
