Each part containing 4 coloured lithographic plates and descriptions and published over the period April 1895 to Nov 1898 by Charles Potter Government Printer on behalf of of Department of Mines and Agriculture (Forest Branch) New South Wales. The parts include two forest trees (consequently of economic value) and two flowering shrubs or smaller plants because of their beauty or scientific interest of their flowers or foliage. The vernacular, aboriginal and botanical names are given with origins and the descriptions (in brevier) mainly follow those of Bentham in the Flora Australiensis. This is an uncommon set and in collectible condition. VG (Booklets - Light shelf rubbing to extremities with no notable shelf soiling. Authored by distinguished American botanist/taxonomist Philip A Munz. Sixty-two pages of text in Portuguese accompanied by 51 finely detailed full-page illustration plates, forty-nine in b&w and two in color, covering 5 genera and 45 species of Onagraceae. Very Good, in printed stiff wraps. A few small closed splits in the paper covering of the spine panel. Octavo, pp xii, 310, illustrated (including two chromolithographs by Keulemans), a rather poor copy, lacking the folding map, an ex-Boots library copy in red library cloth, a bit used and weak internally with cracked hinges (through front and rear hinges tight and strong), some plates a little frayed, a small stamp on the front endpaper and a library label on the rear, the cloth rather worn, marked on the upper cover, the spine torn. A useful working copy. [Andre was an explorer and collector of natural history specimens . He wrote a glossary of common and scientific names of plants and animals and put together a collection of 1800 bird skins which are held at Tring. He was a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and a Fellow of the Zoological Society. Drawn and engraved by pharmacist turned naturalist Ferdinand Vietz ((1772-1815) and published in volume 7 of Icones Plantarum Medico-Oeconomico-Technologicarum, edited by J. L. Kerndl and published by Schrämblischen in Vienna in 1818. Original hand-coloring. Like all the plates from Vietz's classic work on medicinal uses of plants, this is a lovely original print on high-quality watermarked laid paper. Condition is very good: clean and bright.
