Northern Dvina peasant painting is an original, striking phenomenon in Russian folk art. Painted household articles were in great demand in Russia. The sources they came from were often kept secret and it was only in 1950 that the History and Art Museum of the Zagorsk Reserve organized an expedition to explore the North Dvina area folk painting phenomenon. The purpose of this effort was to identify the regions and centers where painting was truly traditional. The expedition succeeded in clarifying and rendering concrete the commonly used but extremely vague term "Northern-Dvina painting". According to researchers, these paintings can be divided into three major, independent categories or styles: the Rakulka, the Permogorye and the Borok painting styles. The Northern Dvina is a river in northwestern Russia flowing through the Vologda Oblast and Arkhangelsk Oblast into the Dvina Bay of the White Sea. Along with the Pechora River to the east, it drains most of Northwest Russia into the Arctic Ocean. The cities of Arkhangelsk and Vologda, as well as many smaller towns, many of those of significant historical importance such as Veliky Ustyug, Totma, Solvychegodsk, and Kholmogory, are located in the river basin of the Northern Dvina. The area was originally populated by Finno-Ugric peoples and then colonized by the Novgorod Republic. Until the 1700s, Arkhangelsk was the main trading harbour for the sea trade of Russia and western Europe, and the Northern Dvina was the main trading route connecting the central Russia with Arkhangelsk.
