[6], vii-xxx, [2], 623, [1] pp. Black cloth with gold lettering on the front board and spine, a silver decoration on the front board. Price of $7.50 on the front flap of the dust jacket. Illustrated with colorful maps on the endpapers and pastedowns and several in-text and full-page illustrations by Michael Leonard. Melodies and guitar chords transcribed by Peggy Seeger. With one hundred piano arrangements by Matyas Seiber and Don Banks. A later printing with no edition stated on the copyright page. A large compendium of American folk ballads, from both Black and white musicians. Among the included songs are "Irene", "Pretty Boy Floyd", "The River Jordan", "Shenandoah", "Willie the Weeper", "She'll Be Coming Round the Mountain", and numerous others. The songs come from all regions of the United States, reflecting British colonial history, moments in Black-American history, memories from American pioneers, and more. An important history of the foundations of American music. A Very Good book with a bit of foxing to the top textblock and the rear board slightly bowed, name on the front flyleaf; jacket shows notable edge wear and rubbing.
